is your system version really 10.6.1? Then probably upgrading to a more recent 10.6 version may solve your problem. Also 4GB RAM is not really much - do your projects have many software instruments tracks? Then don't run any application parallel to GarargeBand, i.e. not Safari, iPhoto, Aperture, iMovie ..
Did this stalling problem occur, after you had to 'force quit' GB? Then the progam sometimes is left in a state of limbo with inconsistent preference files. In this cases Hang Time's fix for 'odd ball'solutions can help: removing the garageBand Preferences, see Helpful AnswerRe: Garageband crashes (Macbook Pro 2011) when changing track pitch. Any ideas. i have searched here with no luck.
Or have you installed anything else lately? Any other software at all? Sometimes the installation of third party software corrupts the System Library and other programs will have problems with missing or wrong library items. Then it may be necessary to reinstall GarageBand, or even to reinstall the system to restore the missing Library items.
